Empty Orchestra brings the magnificently creepy Murnau classic ‘Nosferatu’ to the upstairs of the Roundy. Chills, sounds, silences and suspense provided live by the equally creepy quartet of Andrea Bonino, Cian Heffernan, Ellen King and Tony O Connor. F. W. Murnau’s classic of German Expressionism is a retelling of ‘Dracula’, with names changed to avoid paying royalties to the widow of Bram Stoker.
Dark and eerie, it delights in bathing characters in shadows and raises unease by framing them in the corners of the screen. Bizarre scenes are inhabited by characters and carriages moving at unnatural speeds. Max Schreck’s vampyre is more anomalistic than later portrayals of Dracula and his kin, but no less iconic. Indeed, many cliches of the horror genre were established in this very film, and the Empty Orchestra invites you to come see them in their original form as we do our best, musically, to live up to the inventiveness of the movie. Doors at 9pm Entry €6 (€3)
