The Empty Orchestra is a brand new event to Cork, dedicated to screening silent films and providing them with live improvised soundtracks. Guest performers will frequently join the house-band and every month will see the screening of films of all genres, from Modern Times to Koyaanisqatsi. Our first event will be a screening of Fritz Lang’s classic film Metropolis (1927). Created at the height of the German Expressionist movement in film, Metropolis has, over the decades, become heralded as a cult classic and a masterpiece of cinema. The film’s narrative remains provocative and harrowing to this day, and its sensational and startling imagery continues to impress nearly 90 years after its release.
