What’s the Story? is a new storytelling initiative in Cork. The next gig is on Monday 8th June at 8pm. The idea is to give an outlet for aspiring and established storytellers – people who like to stand up and tell their stories to interested listeners. Inspired by the hugely successful Story Swaps that are part of the annual Cape Clear Island International Storytelling Festival in Cork, and the regular Milk and Cookies events in Dublin where complete strangers tell stories to each other for entertainment, What’s the Story? provides a monthly opportunity for adults who love to tell or listen to stories to participate in an event devoted entirely to stories without notes, books, poetry, or music. It has been created by people who love to tell stories for people who love to listen to stories. It provides a forum for established storytellers to practice their craft and for aspiring storytellers to develop and hone their skills. It was realised that many regular events were available for singers, musicians, poets, and reciters! This event provides a dedicated event for storytellers. So anyone who has a story to tell, or if you want to learn more about storytelling, or just like listening to good stories told well, you will feel at home. More experienced storytellers will be on hand to give advice and encouragement, and to give a flavour of their own styles! What’s the Story? is about telling stories – not reading them. It’s not stand-up, it’s not about telling jokes, but humour is, of course, very welcome. We’re looking for storytellers and those who like to listen. So maybe you thought that storytelling isn’t for you or that you are only a listener! Well we need you, all of you to join us. There are three essential ingredients at this event – the story, the listener and the teller. So why not come along and be amused, enthralled and mystified without even leaving your chair. The next What’s the Story? evening of storytelling happens on Monday May 11th at 8.30pm upstairs in the Roundy, Castle Street, Cork. Admission is free. Phone 087 6954946 for further information
